June 2012

Dear Parents,

As the end of the school year approaches, we want to emphasize how critical it is for all students to continue reading throughout the summer. Research shows that a decrease or absence of daily reading in the summer causes a decline in reading comprehension and fluency.

Tara Ethridge, our learning hub librarian, has developed a wiki http://isbsummerreading.wikispaces.com that provides students and parents with resources that will support continued development in reading through the summer. Please take some time to become familiar with this resource.

Please make reading a part of what you do as a family this summer, every day. Visit libraries, read chapter books outloud together, talk about books, model daily reading yourself. Make it what you do! It will make a big difference when students return to school in August.

Happy summer and enjoy reading!
